Asahi Kasei Demonstrates Proof of Concept for Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Unique Electrolyte
The Japanese tech firm Asahi Kasei has successfully demonstrated a proof of concept (POC) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) utilizing its proprietary high ionic conductive electrolyte. This breakthrough technology enhances power output at low temperatures and boosts durability at high temperatures, addressing critical issues in current LIBs. Additionally, this innovation can reduce costs and battery pack sizes while increasing energy density.
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are typically recommended for use within a temperature range of 10 to 45°C. At lower temperatures, cell capacity and power output decrease, and charging times are extended. Conversely, higher temperatures accelerate aging, shortening battery lifespan. As the global market for energy storage systems, particularly electric vehicles, expands rapidly, maintaining stable performance and high durability under extreme temperatures is crucial.
Asahi Kasei is a leading innovator in lithium-ion battery research and material manufacturing. The company began developing a high ionic conductivity electrolyte in 2010, inspired by Honorary Fellow Akira Yoshino’s focus on acetonitrile as a promising component for lithium-ion battery electrolytes. This advanced electrolyte allows for a reduction in battery pack size while maintaining power output, thereby enhancing energy density and reducing overall pack costs.
Compared to cells using conventional electrolytes, the tested prototype cylindrical cells demonstrated high power at −40°C and twice the cycle life at 60°C before reaching a state of health (SOH) of 80%. The target for commercialization is set for 2025.
Kazuya Noda, Senior General Manager of Asahi Kasei’s Innovation Strategy Center, stated, «This proof of concept represents a technological breakthrough. By licensing our electrolyte technology to LIB manufacturers globally, Asahi Kasei aims to facilitate the development of more affordable and compact battery systems, which are crucial for fostering a more sustainable society.»
